Hong Kong’s Music Scene Mourns the Loss of DJ Kulu, a Jazz and Soul Legend
Hong Kong, January 2, 2025 – The city’s vibrant music scene is in mourning following the passing of renowned DJ Kulu at the age of 79. Dubbed the “godfather of jazz and soul DJing,” Kulu left an indelible mark on Hong Kong’s cultural fabric, inspiring generations with his unique blend of jazz, funk, soul, and hip-hop.
Born and raised in Wan Chai, Kulu’s love affair with music began in his childhood, fueled by the energetic sounds of local bars. His early passion for jazz was shaped by legends like Stan Getz and Paul Desmond. In a 2009 interview, Kulu reminisced about his roots, saying “Wan Chai was just as sleazy then as it is now. I lived right on Lockhart Road where the action was.”
Initially pursuing a career in photography, Kulu captured iconic musicians such as Chet Baker and Dizzy Gillespie. However, at 50, he made the bold decision to pursue his true calling – music. After returning to Hong Kong in 1999 from the UK, Kulu quickly became a staple in the nightlife scene, known for his dynamic sets at venues like Kee Club and Amnesia.
Kulu was also a co-founder of Ultralounge, a performance group that toured globally and hosted legendary Sunday sessions at Liquid, solidifying his role in promoting Hong Kong’s jazz-funk movement. He established the jazz ensemble Brothers’ Keeper and launched Jazz Joint UK in Edinburgh, advocating for live music.
Beyond his musical talents, Kulu was a community builder, connecting artists and audiences through his infectious enthusiasm and extensive knowledge. His stylish presence and personal charm were integral to his legacy, as he mentored emerging talent within the scene.
Tributes have poured in, celebrating Kulu’s unique style and lasting impact on the music community. Masaya Fantasista of Jazzy Sport reflected on Kulu’s enduring presence, saying “He was a symbolic figure in Hong Kong’s music community – someone who loved and was deeply loved by people of all ages and backgrounds.”
DJ Kulu’s vibrant spirit and passion for music will be missed. Rest in peace, DJ Kulu – 1945-2024.
